Harvested on September 29th, the Grenache was made with 50% whole clusters and underwent a spontaneous fermentation lasting 21 days. It was then aged for 20 months in a 400L neutral puncheon before being bottled unfined and unfiltered. 41 cases made.

A wine decidedly mature in its color, aroma, and texture, the Alder Springs Grenache presents a pale onion-skin rim enrobing a light rust-colored body. The nose is dominated by earthy aromas with a char to them despite the wines harvest prior to the fires of 2017. Earlier green strawberry aromas have turned towards fruit leather. Despite a moderate reticence in the initial nose the wine surprises in the mouth with a robustness beyond what any of the sensory cues might have initially told you. On the tongue the fruit turns a touch fresher with that kind of perceived sweetness trick California wines like to present despite all scientific evidence withstanding. It finishes with a scattering of tannins across the tongue that enhance the body and a final kiss of herbal amaro bitterness to invite continued sips.
